The Slackers — Redlight
A Selection from my Top 50 Favorite Records from the 90s Series
This is one of my personal top 50 favorite records from the 90s. If the cover makes it look like another in a cluster of nostalgia records, you're not entirely off-base. That said, one of the things that sets this record apart is that every song is single-worthy (including the two instrumentals). The compositions and their arrangements are absolutely delightful, such that the word "ska" is not a dirty word when in reference to this band. Also, the sound of the record as a record is very good — excellent production, mixing, and mastering. Put it on when you're cooking dinner, or walking home from the bus, and you will suddenly find a little pep in your step, but nothing that hits you over the head. Hummable, whistle-able, and sing-along-at-the-top-of-your-lungs-able, this record is refreshingly free of cringe-worthy content and sprinkled with messages that celebrate your humanity while reinforcing your virtue.
